Tiffin History
The history of Tiffin dates back to the early 1800s. The bronze statue of “The Indian Maiden” is at the site of Fort Ball, the military depot of the war of 1812. Eratus Bowe was among the first settlers in the region. In the year 1820, Josiah Hedges purchased land on the south bank of the Sandusky River and named this village “Tiffin” after Edward Tiffin, the first governor of Ohio. Tiffin was officially incorporated on March 7, 1835. Following the discovery of natural gas in the region in 1888, new enterprises and industries began to establish base in Tiffin thereby turning it into a prosperous industrial city.
